Handmade products for hearth and home

Each shearing yields one laundry basket of fleece per sheep.  At right is a close up of the wool before it is washed.
We have Southdown sheep.  Their wool is downy and short (right).  Not the usual type to spin into fine yarn.  But, we have found it very versatile. We often use natural dyes.  This picture (left) shows wool dyed with indigo, marigold and undyed.
We dye in pots and crock pots.  Sometimes using koolade or commercial dyes (right).  The gray (far right) is from a neighboring sheep with natural gray wool.
Above:  Black walnut dyed wool, blended with wool dyed red. Above:  We card our dyed wool, getting it ready to spin by hand on a drop spindle. Above:  spindles with spun silk. Above:  basket with finished skeins of yarn.
